Artist's Description

Alaska's Maclaren Glacier, located distant left of this photo, is an alpine glacier located southeast of Mount Hayes.

The Glacier and area received its name from (Dr) Norman Henry William Maclaren from Glasgow, Scotland. In the early 1900's Norman (Norrie) traveled via dog team into this area for the Royal Geographic Society to make the first maps of large areas around Alaska.

Norman Maclaren died in Glasgow, Scotland in 1937 at the age of 57 years old. His wife Mary Margaret Garnet died in 1989 at the age of 95 in Essex, England.

Today, glacier meltwater feeds the MacLaren River, which travels through this valley floor of low growing alpine tundra and flowers. As this glacier retreats faster each year, this lush ecosystem could one day be forever changed.
