Description
These polar bear siblings wait while Iñupiat hunters tow in a bowhead whale captured earlier in the day. We could not see the hunter's boat, but the polar bears had their noses in that direction.
Polar bears' olfactory nerves allow them to smell roughly 20 miles away, 3 feet underneath the ice, and about to a mile away on a single seal breathing hole in the sea ice.
This is a feast not to be missed because in the wild polar bear hunts have a 2% success rate. So each year these endangered marine animals are drawn to the small village of Kaktovik during legal subsistence hunting to feast on the remaining whale carcasses, which average 50 feet long and weigh between 60 to 80 tons.
It’s quite an honor and experience to be present in the middle of such an activity. I look forward to the day we can return!
